How do you detach the strap? It looks affixed to one side

You can’t completely detach the strap but it can be adjusted in length. I just shorten mine completely when riding and have had an issue. I really like this bag’

Does it stand up, or will it flop over it it isn't full?

It stands up nicely on its own. I've had it strapped to my bike in the garage waiting for spring since I got it.

Will it hold a large bike lock?

Yes. I sometimes carry my ulock and cable. Most often I just have my combination lock (6' 8mm cable). Also carry small laptop (11.5") and notebook. On casual rides can carry lunch, first aid kit, sm toolkit, etc

Can I pack a Surface Pro in this bag to commute to work, or will it be too tight?

Yes. I have Surface Pro and just tried it!
