I have a whirlpool tub and since we are almost in our 80s getting out of it, and sometimes even in it has been difficult. I put two of these on the tub diagonal corners and they work great easy to get too easy to install.

As others have said, these aren't actually 18" center to center. More like 17.5" tube end to tube end. I'm using it as vertical so it doesn't matter. What I did like is the flanges are bolted to the tube, so they can be rotated to fit where the stud is underneath the wall covering (plaster/drywall or tile, etc.). It may be that works out to 18" centers for horizontal mounting with the end caps rotated accordingly, but I didn't try that. With two long stainless 8x2" screws from my personal supply on each end into the stud, the bar is very secure. Used one of them to hold an adapter for a shower wand. Good enough, happy.
